WELCOME TO GRADE FOUR! I hope you had a wonderful summer and are coming back ready and eager to learn. The fourth grade curriculum is filled with interesting subjects that we will discover together. I am excited to begin a new year and hope you are too. In literature, we begin with a unit on Risk and Consequences. We will read stories about people who take risks and what happens to them as a result of those risks. We’ll start off in Africa where we’ll meet a boy named Suku and a baby elephant named Toto. Their adventure introduces us to the theme of Risk and Consequence. This is one of my favorite units. We will be doing lots of critical thinking and problem solving in math this year. Multiplication facts will be extremely important, however. Every week we will have a “Mad Minute” quiz with multiplication facts. We’ll start off trying to do a worksheet in four minutes, then move on to three minutes, then two and finally one. It’s always fun to see who will be the first to break one minute. In social studies we will explore our great state of New Jersey. Do you know the state tree of New Jersey? How about our state animal or bird? We will learn these facts in Chapter One of The New Jersey Adventure. Our focus in Religion will be the Ten Commandments and the Eight Beatitudes. We will learn how they help us follow the teachings of Jesus and the Church. We will be typing fall paragraphs, writing apple haiku and doing some neat fall art projects. Together we’ll “fall” into some fun in Fourth Grade!
