ABOUT THE LIBRARY...

Saint Jerome School is fortunate to have a librarian and a fantastic group of volunteers who help the students in the library. The children are learning about the Dewey Decimal System, the card catalog, the parts of a book, how to find information in almanacs, atlases and encyclopedias. They are learning that books are their friends. They can escape from everyday schedules and visit far off places or become a character in a story that lives a life of adventure.

In addition to learning how a library operates, students in grades 1, 2 and 3 are introduced stories from the Junior Great Book series. With the help of volunteers these students are exposed to skills, which include interpretative and evaluative questions, sharing questions with each other and expressing their thoughts about the stories through written and artistic works.

New books are continuously being purchased for all grades. The library has had the majority of its books put into the computer. We are still working on adding new books as they are catalogued and we are also working on having the students name and grade entered to facilitate the lending process.

Thanks to all our parents and volunteers who have made the project possible!
